Choosing an ATV or side-by-side for farm and acreage work
ATV or side-by-side for chores on a northern Alberta farm or acreage? Compare them on hauling, towing, passengers, cab comfort and attachments, and check the warranty's work-use terms before you buy.
On a farm or acreage, the right machine is the one that fits the chores you do every week, not the one with the biggest engine. Start with the work, then match the machine to it.
Start with a list of the jobs
Write down what you'll actually do with it, and how often. For example:
- Checking cattle, fences or water bowls
- Hauling feed, salt, mineral, fencing supplies or firewood
- Towing a small trailer, sprayer, harrow or wood splitter
- Clearing snow from the yard and lane
- Carrying a passenger, a dog, or a kid to the bus stop
- Running chores at minus thirty, in the dark
Then use the comparison below.
ATV or side-by-side for chores
| If the job is mostly... | An ATV suits it if... | A side-by-side suits it if... |
|---|---|---|
| Checking fences and stock alone | You want the narrowest, lightest machine for tight gates, bush trails and soft ground. | You want a roof, seatbelts and somewhere to put tools. |
| Hauling feed, posts or wood | Loads are small and fit the racks, or you pull a trailer. | You want a cargo box. Manitoba's farm-safety guide notes side-by-sides (UTVs) suit heavier loads and passengers. |
| Carrying a passenger | The ATV is built and labelled for two riders. Never carry a passenger on a one-rider ATV. | You want seats and seatbelts for each person. |
| Winter chores | You're fine with heated grips, hand guards and good gear. | You want doors, a windshield or a heated cab. |
| Young or new operators in the family | Each rider fits the machine and is old enough for it. Alberta's agriculture ministry says no one under 16 should operate an adult-size ATV. | Each driver meets the manufacturer's minimum age. Many manuals set 16 and a valid driver's licence. |
Read the ratings, not the brochure
Every machine has published limits. Before you buy, ask to see these for the exact model and trim:
- Rack ratings (front and rear) on an ATV
- Cargo box rating and total weight capacity (people plus cargo plus accessories) on a side-by-side
- Towing capacity and maximum tongue weight
- Ground clearance, fuel capacity, and whether a winch, hitch and power steering are standard
As an example of how these numbers work together, Segway's owner's manual for the Fugleman UT10 lists a 680 kg (1,500 lb) maximum weight capacity, a 454 kg (1,000 lb) cargo box limit, 1,134 kg (2,500 lb) towing and a 100 kg (220 lb) maximum tongue weight. The six-seat UT10 Crew has a lower cargo limit of 350 kg (772 lb). The weight of riders counts against total capacity, so a full cab leaves less for the box. See Loads, towing and attachments for how to apply this.
Spec sheets sometimes disagree with each other or leave a figure out. If a number isn't published for the trim you're looking at, ask the dealer to show it to you in writing.
Check the warranty's work-use terms
This is the one most people miss. Manufacturers often treat commercial use differently from personal use, and farm work can raise the question.
- AODES Canada's limited warranty terms say vehicles used for commercial purposes have their warranty reduced to six months of parts and labour.
- Segway Powersports Canada's limited warranty guide excludes products used for rental or commercial activities from its coverage.
Neither document defines exactly where a family farm or acreage sits. If the machine will do paid work, belong to a business, or be used by employees, ask the dealer which warranty terms apply and get the answer in writing before you sign.
Questions to ask at the dealership
- What are the rack, box, total-capacity and towing ratings for this exact trim?
- Which attachments (plow, winch, hitch, cab) are approved by the manufacturer for this model?
- Does my planned use count as commercial under this warranty?
- What's the break-in procedure and when is the first service due?
- Where's the nearest service department for warranty work?
Our stores carry ATVs and side-by-sides at Frontier Mitsubishi (Grande Prairie), Borderlands (High Level and La Crete) and Frontier Auto & Imports (Whitecourt, AODES).
